This section includes a case study
with which students can get a hands-on experience with many of the
concepts of network design as well as the basics of structured
cabling. The case study is based on a requested build-out of the
hypothetical F.A.R.B software development company. The company is
planning to occupy four floors of a combined warehouse and office
building. The building comes complete with an auditorium, a
sundeck, several conference rooms—and more than a few cabling and
design challenges.
Students who work through the case
study will discover that much of what they have learned so far
takes on new meaning as the theoretical concepts are given
concrete examples. Students are encouraged to work through the
case study in small teams. The give and take of group discussion
will help many new ideas take root. A hints section is provided to
get students started.
